About Vicki

Vicki Schmidt is a lifelong Kansan and Republican. She was born and raised in Wichita where she and her high school sweetheart, Mike, both attended Wichita South High School. Vicki graduated from KU’s School of Pharmacy and has worked over 40 years as a local pharmacist. Vicki and Mike have been married for over 50 years and have two grown sons and four grandchildren.

As a working mom and state employee, Vicki found errors in the Kansas Medical Assistance Program that were costing the state millions of dollars. She implemented a plan to make the state more efficient and it resulted in more than $391 million in recouped dollars for the state.

Vicki then served Shawnee and Wabaunsee counties in the Kansas Senate where she fought to ensure insurance coverage for children diagnosed with Autism and helped bring world-class cancer care to Kansas.

In 2018 she was elected and in 2022 she was reelected Kansas Insurance Commissioner – during both elections she received the highest vote count statewide. As Insurance Commissioner, Vicki has returned over $145 million and counting to Kansas families and lowered the cost of doing business by over $75 million. Her customer-oriented approach to government is a shining example of how government should operate and how efficiencies can become realities.

Vicki faced the biggest challenge of her life when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She shared her journey with Kansans and was declared cancer free in 2023.

Vicki and Mike have resided in Topeka for over 40 years, where Vicki has been involved with countless community events, local boards and organizations.
