Vicki Schmidt selects Kansas Farm Bureau President Joe Newland as her Lieutenant Governor

VICKI SCHMIDT SELECTS KANSAS FARM BUREAU PRESIDENT
JOE NEWLAND AS HER LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt, today, announced Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) President Joe Newland as her running mate. Newland was elected KFB’s president in 2022 and advocates for Kansas farmers and ranchers at the state and national level.

“There is not a more trusted leader in rural Kansas than Joe Newland,” said Vicki Schmidt. “He understands the challenges Kansans face every day — tirelessly fighting to protect our land, water and way of life.”

Prior to leading KFB’s advocacy efforts, Newland served three years in the Kansas House of Representatives, representing Greenwood, Wilson and Woodson Counties and parts of Elk County.

“So many Kansans have seen first-hand the humble and honest leadership Joe brings to the table,” said Vicki Schmidt. “He isn’t afraid of hard work and he knows how to get his boots dirty.”

Newland and his wife, Dana, operate a diversified farming operation in Wilson County. They farm 4,000 acres of wheat, corn, soybeans and hay and manage a 400 head cow-calf herd.

“Vicki and I share a love for Kansas and a passion for service,” said Newland. “It’s clear to me, like so many other Republicans across Kansas, she is the best choice to be our next governor.”

Newland has a lifetime of work on Farm Bureau policy. He has promoted open and free trade that creates markets for Kansas farm products, authorized the creation of health benefit plans to provide health care solutions for Kansas families and led efforts to preserve the quality and quantity of Kansas water.

“Kansas has created so many opportunities for me and honestly this one I never expected,” said Newland. “I’m honored to be chosen for this position and excited to talk more with Kansans about how we can put together common sense solutions that will actually lower costs, streamline operations and get government out of the way.”

If elected, Newland will serve as both the Lt. Governor and the Secretary of Agriculture.  Newland will be stepping down from his post at Kansas Farm Bureau on June 1 when he and Vicki Schmidt officially file to become candidates for office.
